Intelligence Quotient (or I.Q.) i defined as a number that represents a person’s reasoning ability (via/ problem solving test) compared to the others your age. This term “I.Q.” is one used in basketball and sports quite often. One of my clients one day asked me a question about my level of intellect when it came to my basketball I.Q, something I have never thought about in great detail. Measuring an individual’s I.Q requires examining their ability to not only play the game from a skill set perspective (can you dribble pass and shoot) but in also measuring their ability to read and react to different in-game scenarios (recognizing and identifying offensive plays from the opponent and within your team). With that being said I’ve comprised a scoring tally of the things I feel are important and developed a grading scale for measuring your basketball Intelligence Quotient. How does your score measure up? What is your basketball I.Q?
- /10 = Ball handling ability (dribble moves w/ left and right
- /10 = Passing ability (ability to throw accurate passes)
- /10 = Shooting ability (shooting from close and long range)
- /10 = Defensive skills (on and off ball defensive skills)
- /10 = Intangibles (Rebounding, setting screens, hustle plays)
- /10 = Identifying defensive coverage (how defenders are playing screens, etc )
- /10 = Identifying opponent offensive playcalling
- / 10 = Being able to make appropriate offensive calls (recognizing what defense the opponents are in and making the right offensive call)
- /10 = Clock Management ( knowing time and score, knowing foul situation, how many time outs your team has, etc)
- /10 = Leadership skills ( how much of a leader are you with your team)
